Full Day Salmon Fishing in Oregon's Coastal Bays

Get ready to chase some of the Northwest's most prized fish on this full-day salmon trip with Brockmans Guide Service. We'll be hitting either Coquille Bay or Winchester Bay, depending on where the bite is hot. From mid-August through mid-October, you'll have a front-row seat to one of Oregon's best salmon runs. Whether you're a seasoned angler or new to the game, this private trip for up to four people puts you right in the action when these hard-fighting fish are at their peak.

What to Expect on the Water

We'll be trolling for salmon, which means covering lots of water to find actively feeding fish. The exact meeting spot and launch time will be dialed in based on tides and conditions, but expect an early start to make the most of prime fishing hours. As we transition from late summer into fall, these coastal bays offer some of the most consistent salmon action you'll find anywhere. The weather can be unpredictable, so come prepared with layers. Don't worry though - the fishing tends to heat up even when the temperature drops. Kyle, your guide, will have the boat rigged and ready with top-notch gear to put you on fish.

Trolling Tactics for Big Salmon

Trolling is the name of the game for these fall salmon. We'll be using a mix of cut-plug herring, spinners, and maybe some hoochies to entice bites. The boat is set up with downriggers to get our baits down where the fish are holding. It's a team effort - everyone takes turns on the rods, watching for that telltale dip of the rod tip that signals a strike. When a fish hits, it's all hands on deck! These salmon put up a serious fight, often making blistering runs and acrobatic jumps. Kyle will be right there coaching you through the battle and ready with the net when it's time to land your catch.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Chinook Salmon: Also known as Kings, these are the heavyweights of the Pacific salmon world. Fall Chinook in Oregon's coastal bays typically range from 15 to 40 pounds, with some true monsters topping 50 pounds not unheard of. They're prized for their rich, fatty meat that's perfect for grilling or smoking. Chinook are known for their powerful runs and dogged fights - when one of these bad boys hits your line, you'll know it! They tend to hold in deeper water, often near the bottom, which is why our trolling setup is so effective.

Coho Salmon: Also called silvers, these are the acrobats of the salmon world. Typically smaller than Chinook, averaging 6 to 12 pounds, what they lack in size they make up for in feistiness. Coho are known for their spectacular aerial displays when hooked, often cartwheeling across the surface in attempts to throw the hook. They tend to school up more than Chinook, so when you find them, the action can be fast and furious. Their meat is a bit leaner than Chinook but still makes for excellent table fare. In the fall, look for them closer to the surface, especially on overcast days.
