Top Catches This Season

When it comes to smallmouth bass fishing on the Umpqua, we're talking about some seriously fun techniques. We might start the day throwing topwater lures, watching those bass explode on the surface - it's a rush every time! As the sun climbs higher, we'll switch it up, maybe drop-shotting deeper holes or working soft plastics along the rocky banks. The Umpqua's diverse habitat means we're always adapting our approach, keeping things interesting all day long. And don't worry if you're new to these techniques; we'll walk you through everything step-by-step.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

"My husband and I had a wonderful day on the river with Kyle. He is a very skilled guide, does his research to check river conditions so we aren't driving all over the country. I've done that with other guides. He knows the river and the hidey holes where the fish hang out. We caught beautiful fish and had great conversations. He is our forever guide!!! He should be yours too! Thanks Kyle for a great trip!" - Misty

Species You'll Want to Hook

Smallmouth bass are the stars of the show on the Umpqua, and for good reason. These bronze bruisers are pound-for-pound some of the hardest fighting fish you'll ever tangle with. They range from scrappy 1-pounders to hefty 4-pound-plus trophies that'll test your drag and your nerves. Smallies love to hang around structure - rocks, logs, dropoffs - and when they hit, they hit hard. The best part? They're aggressive feeders all summer long, which means consistent action throughout our June to August season.

What makes Umpqua smallmouth so special is their abundance and their fight. These fish are opportunistic feeders, often striking out of pure aggression rather than hunger. This makes for some explosive topwater action, especially early in the morning or late in the evening. As the day progresses, we'll target them in deeper runs and eddies where they'll readily attack a well-presented jig or crankbait.

While size can vary, the average Umpqua smallmouth runs about 1-2 pounds, with plenty of 3-pounders mixed in to keep things interesting. And for the patient angler, there's always the chance of hooking into a true monster - 5-pound-plus smallmouth that'll have you telling stories for years to come. The beauty of the Umpqua is that whether you're catching numbers or targeting trophies, you're in for a great day on the water.

Smallmouth Bass

Smallmouth bass are feisty fighters that'll give you a run for your money on light tackle. These bronze beauties average 2-3 pounds but can top 5 in the Umpqua. Look for them around rocky areas, submerged logs, and current breaks. They love warm water, so summer's prime time when they're most active. Smallies hit hard and jump like crazy - it's a blast watching them go airborne. They're not picky eaters either. Throw soft plastics, crankbaits, or topwaters and hang on. For a real thrill, try poppers on a fly rod when they're busting bait on the surface. The Umpqua has some of Oregon's best smallmouth fishing. On a good day, you can easily catch 50+ fish. Big ones put up an impressive fight and make excellent table fare if you want to keep a few for dinner. Local tip: When the water's low and clear in late summer, downsize your lures and use lighter line. The big ones get smart but will still hit tiny offerings if you're stealthy.
