We'll be trolling for salmon, which means covering lots of water to find actively feeding fish. The exact meeting spot and launch time will be dialed in based on tides and conditions, but expect an early start to make the most of prime fishing hours. As we transition from late summer into fall, these coastal bays offer some of the most consistent salmon action you'll find anywhere. The weather can be unpredictable, so come prepared with layers. Don't worry though - the fishing tends to heat up even when the temperature drops. Kyle, your guide, will have the boat rigged and ready with top-notch gear to put you on fish.
Trolling is the name of the game for these fall salmon. We'll be using a mix of cut-plug herring, spinners, and maybe some hoochies to entice bites. The boat is set up with downriggers to get our baits down where the fish are holding. It's a team effort - everyone takes turns on the rods, watching for that telltale dip of the rod tip that signals a strike. When a fish hits, it's all hands on deck! These salmon put up a serious fight, often making blistering runs and acrobatic jumps. Kyle will be right there coaching you through the battle and ready with the net when it's time to land your catch.

Chinook Salmon: Also known as Kings, these are the heavyweights of the Pacific salmon world. Fall Chinook in Oregon's coastal bays typically range from 15 to 40 pounds, with some true monsters topping 50 pounds not unheard of. They're prized for their rich, fatty meat that's perfect for grilling or smoking. Chinook are known for their powerful runs and dogged fights - when one of these bad boys hits your line, you'll know it! They tend to hold in deeper water, often near the bottom, which is why our trolling setup is so effective.
Coho Salmon: Also called silvers, these are the acrobats of the salmon world. Typically smaller than Chinook, averaging 6 to 12 pounds, what they lack in size they make up for in feistiness. Coho are known for their spectacular aerial displays when hooked, often cartwheeling across the surface in attempts to throw the hook. They tend to school up more than Chinook, so when you find them, the action can be fast and furious. Their meat is a bit leaner than Chinook but still makes for excellent table fare. In the fall, look for them closer to the surface, especially on overcast days.
If you're after some of the best salmon fishing Oregon has to offer, this full-day trip with Brockmans Guide Service is hard to beat. You'll be fishing at the peak of the fall run, with a guide who knows these waters like the back of his hand. Chinook, or King salmon, are the heavyweight champs of the Pacific Northwest. These bruisers can top 30 pounds, with thick, orange-red flesh that's prized for its rich flavor. You'll find them hanging out in deeper water, often near river mouths or underwater structures. Late summer to early fall is prime time, as they start their spawning run. Chinooks are known for their powerful fights - when one hits, you'll know it. They'll test your gear and your arms with long, determined runs. To up your chances, try trolling with cut-plug herring or large spinners near the bottom. Local tip: on sunny days, go with brighter lures like chartreuse or orange. These kings seem to key in on those flashy colors when the water's clear. Whether you're after a trophy for the wall or just want to tangle with a hard-fighting fish, Chinooks deliver an experience you won't forget.
Coho, or silver salmon, are the acrobats of our Oregon waters. Typically running 8-12 pounds, these fish punch above their weight class with spectacular aerial displays when hooked. You'll find them in coastal rivers and bays from late summer through fall, often in slower, deeper pools or near cover. Cohos are curious and aggressive, making them a blast to target. They'll readily strike lures, flies, or bait, giving anglers of all skill levels a shot at some action. The meat is bright orange and delicious - perfect for the grill or smoker. When fishing for silvers, don't be afraid to cover water. These fish are always on the move, so keep your presentation mobile. A local secret: twitching a pink jig under a float can be deadly effective when they're holding in deeper runs. Whether you're after a fun fight or a tasty dinner, Coho salmon deliver on both counts.
