Captain Kyle's full-day salmon fishing adventure puts you right in the heart of Oregon's best fall salmon runs. Operating out of Coquille Bay and Winchester Bay, this 8-hour private trip is perfect for folks who've always wanted to try their hand at salmon fishing but weren't sure where to start. With space for up to four guests, you'll get personalized attention and hands-on instruction while targeting some of the Pacific Northwest's most prized salmon species. Running from mid-August through mid-October, this trip times perfectly with peak salmon activity when fish are moving through these productive bays in serious numbers.
This isn't your typical crowded charter boat experience. Captain Kyle keeps groups small and focuses on making sure everyone feels comfortable and confident with their gear. The day starts early with a meet-up that's coordinated based on daily conditions - sometimes that means launching from Coquille Bay's protected waters, other times Winchester Bay offers better opportunities. Captain Kyle's been reading these waters for years and knows exactly where to position the boat for the best action. You'll spend the day learning proper trolling techniques, understanding how to work different lures, and getting comfortable with the rhythm of salmon fishing. The 8-hour format gives everyone plenty of time to get multiple hookups and really dial in their technique without feeling rushed.
Trolling for salmon is all about covering water and presenting your bait at the right depth and speed. Captain Kyle runs a well-equipped boat with quality rods, reels, and all the terminal tackle you'll need. You'll learn how to work with downriggers to get your offerings down to where the salmon are holding, typically anywhere from 20 to 60 feet depending on conditions. The beauty of trolling is that it's beginner-friendly but still requires skill to master - you'll pick up techniques for reading your rod tips, understanding when to set the hook, and how to fight fish without losing them at the boat. Captain Kyle provides hands-on coaching for everything from proper rod handling to safe fish landing, so even if you've never held a fishing rod before, you'll be working like a seasoned angler by the end of the day.
Chinook salmon are the kings of these waters for good reason. These powerful fish typically run between 15 to 30 pounds in these bays, with some real bruisers pushing even larger. Chinooks are known for their incredible strength and stamina - when you hook into one, you'll know it immediately from the way your rod doubles over and line starts peeling off the reel. They're most active during the early morning and late afternoon hours, which is why Captain Kyle times the trips to hit these prime feeding windows. What makes Chinooks so special here is their aggressive feeding behavior as they stage in the bays before heading upriver. They'll slam herring, anchovies, and properly presented lures with authority that'll get your heart pumping.
Coho salmon bring a completely different energy to the fight. These silver rockets typically weigh in between 8 to 15 pounds but make up for their smaller size with acrobatic displays that'll leave you breathless. Cohos are famous for their jumping ability - once hooked, they'll often launch themselves clear out of the water multiple times, twisting and turning in spectacular fashion. They're also more unpredictable than Chinooks, sometimes following lures for long distances before deciding to strike. The fall run brings fresh, bright cohos into both bays, and they're often found in the upper portions of the water column where they're actively feeding on baitfish. Their aggressive nature and spectacular fights make them a favorite among anglers who love action-packed fishing.
Oregon's fall salmon runs don't last forever, and the window from mid-August through mid-October represents some of the most consistent salmon fishing you'll find on the coast. Captain Kyle's personalized approach and small group format means spots fill up quickly, especially during peak season when word gets out about good fishing. The non-refundable deposit policy ensures serious anglers get priority, and Captain Kyle recommends reaching out before booking to discuss timing and conditions. Whether you're a complete beginner looking to learn the ropes or someone who wants to experience Oregon salmon fishing at its finest, this trip delivers the personal attention and quality fishing that keeps guests coming back season after season.
King salmon are the giants of the salmon world, and we see plenty of them during our August through October runs here in the bays. These bruisers typically run 15-30 pounds in our waters, with that distinctive blue-green back and silver sides covered in black spots. What makes them special is that incredible fight combined with the best-tasting salmon you'll find - that rich, orange-red meat is worth every minute on the water. Kings like to cruise deeper waters, so we'll be trolling with downriggers to get our gear down where they're feeding. They're light-sensitive, so early morning and evening bites are often the hottest. My go-to tip for beginners: when you feel that first tap, resist the urge to set the hook hard - let the fish load up on the gear and the hooks will do their job.

Silver salmon are absolute dynamite on the line and perfect for folks wanting to see what salmon fishing is all about. These acrobatic fighters average 8-12 pounds and are famous for their wild jumps - they can leap 6 feet straight up when hooked. You'll find them in the upper water column, unlike their bigger king cousins, and they're aggressive feeders during our late summer runs. What guests love most is that explosive strike and the aerial show that follows. The bright orange-red meat makes for great eating too. Cohos often travel in schools, so when we find one, we usually find more. Here's a local trick: when a coho jumps, keep steady pressure but don't horse them - let them tire themselves out with those spectacular leaps and you'll land more fish. Their silver sides and dark blue-green backs make them easy to spot in the net.
